Hometown Throwdown: Excellence in Edmeston, New York
Located on the western border of Otsego County, Edmeston is home to around 1,800 residents and is located south of Utica, New York.
Historically, Edmeston's economy focused on dairy farming. Creameries, stables, cheesemakers, and tanneries dotted the landscape. Today, modern industries such as insurance and healthcare are the main economic drivers.
Let's take a look at some of the things that make Edmeston most excellent.
NYCM Insurance
NYCM Insurance is consistently touted as one of the best places to work in the region. They're also running out of room for the awards they consistently win. In 2023 they won a second prestigious J.D. Power award. I had the chance to tour their state of the art facility a few months ago, and it's nothing short of breathtaking.
Ben and Judy's Sugarhouse
Ok, this is my kind of place. Located in West Edmeston, Ben and Judy's makes a full line of maple products. But wait, there's more! In season, they host all you can eat pancake breakfast with their syrup as the star of the show. Tours are offered to see how their products are made. Yum.
Pathfinder Village
Pathfinder Village is a 300 acre facility "where people who have Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities discover their own value and talents, and share these gifts with others". Established in 1922, the campus resembles a colonial village where former Executive Director Marian Mullet envisioned "a very free environment where people can come and go at will, where neighborliness and friendship count, where you don't have to ask permission to do things".
