I hope you've enjoyed the recent fall like weather that we've been experiencing, it's all about to be a memory as we'll be experiencing a heat wave starting early next week.

According to meteorologist Mark Margavage, who specializes in our region's weather, near-record strong ridge is predicted by the European Model next week. With it, the temperature and humidity will rise drastically. Like an old friend from Long Island used to say, it's going to be a scorcher.

On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, temperatures will be in the high 80s. The humidity will push real feel temps into the mid 90s. While temperatures will decrease slightly into the weekend, but the humid air will linger, keeping real feel temps in the 90s.

During a heat wave, it's crucial to prioritize safety to prevent heat-related illnesses. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and caffeinated drinks. Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and apply sunscreen to protect your skin. Remain indoors during peak heat hours, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., using fans or air conditioning to stay cool.

If you need to be outside, take regular breaks in the shade and avoid strenuous activities. Check on vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic health conditions, as they are more susceptible to heat-related problems. Never leave children or pets in parked cars, as temperatures can quickly become dangerously high. Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, and confusion, and seek immediate medical help if these symptoms occur. Following these precautions can help ensure safety during extreme heat.
