The Delaware County Public Health Department is conducting an online survey. Its purpose is to determine what residents believe are the most important health related issues.  The survey includes questions about specific health problems, social factors, and ways to improve quality of life.

“The results will be incorporated into the county’s Community Health Assessment that is submitted to the New York State Department of Health,” said Heather Warner, Health Education Coordinator, in an interview with CNY News. “We also want to get the opinions of our community members on what they feel are the health issues facing the county.”

Possible responses to the multiple choice question about the biggest health problems in Delaware County include obesity, Covid and heart disease.  Binge drinking, illegal drug use, and smoking are among possible responses to the question about behaviors or social factors leading to poor health.

Another question relates to health care delivery systems in the county. Possible responses encompass limited access to a doctor or dentist, and the cost of health care and medications.  The data collected may lead to specific actions to enhance public health.

“There is a Community Health Improvement Plan implemented in conjunction with the hospitals in our area,” Warner said. “We work with O’Connor Hospital, which is part of Bassett Health Care, Delaware Valley Hospital, part of the UHS System, and Margaretville Hospital, which is part of Westchester Medical.”

The online survey is at surveymonkey.com/r/DelCoCommunitySurvey. Residents have until June 10 to participate.
