By Liz Hill: Oneonta Townsquare's
With only a few days left before Christmas I thought I would write about the true meaning of Christmas: the Nativity, and the birth of Jesus Christ. However, as you have come to see, my take is always a little different.

When I was years old I decided that I wanted to start playing with my grandmother's porcelain Nativity straight from southern Italy. Of course my parents, being the wise individuals that they are, told me absolutely not. They ended up buying me a plastic nativity to play with (I'm pretty sure there is some sort of sacrilegious practice in that).

One thing led to another, and now I currently have over 50 Nativity sets from around the world. A Russian nestling dolls set intricately painted so that each player in the Nativity scene has their own doll. A Peruvian Nativity made out of a large seed pod. I even have a fun, under-the-sea Nativity made from sea shells.

As you can probably guess, Christmas is different all over the world and is celebrated with  many different customs and traditions. For my family, we all go to Christmas Eve service then head back to the house for cheese and wine. We sit by the tree, and talk about anything and everything. I guess for me the true meaning of Christmas is spending the time with the ones you love.

If you are looking for something fun to do with the ones you love right here in Oneonta, check out the live Nativity scene this Christmas Eve presented by St. James Church, at The Turning Point located at 22 Elm Street. The event will be held from 3-5pm just in time for you to check it out and head home to get that last minute wrapping done!
