Drug Take Back Day Is April 30: Otsego County Drop-off Points

Most of us probably have old, unused, or expired prescription medication sitting in our medicine cabinets taking up space because we just haven't bothered to do a proper clean-out or we don't know what to do with them. Don't flush them down the toilet! Flushed drugs end up polluting our water. No one wants that so here's something easy to do.

You can easily get rid of unwanted prescriptions on the national Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) Drug Take Back Day which is coming up on Saturday, April 30. The DEA holds this event twice a year with the cooperation of law enforcement agencies as collection sites. Drug Take Back is dedicated to preventing drug addiction and overdose deaths which happens all too often. According to the DEA, the October 2021 event resulted in 4,276 law enforcement agencies participating with 4,982 total collection sites and 744,082 lbs. (372 Tons) of drugs surrendered, making it a very successful event. The same or more is hoped for at this Saturday's Drug Take Back.

To get rid of your unwanted prescription drugs, The Otsego County Sheriff’s Office will be accepting expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs this Saturday at 172 County Highway 33W, Cooperstown from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at no charge and with no questions asked. They will not be accepting sharps, needles, liquids, aerosols, and ointments. There is also a dropbox in the lobby of the Sheriff's Office open to the public daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, you can visit the event Facebook page. For convenience, in addition to special Drug Take Back events, you can dispose of medications during regular business hours any time of the year at the Foxcare Pharmacy in Oneonta, Bassett Medical Center Pharmacy in Cooperstown, and O'Connor Hospital Pharmacy in Delhi. All those locations will take any unwanted or expired medications at special kiosks on an ongoing basis.
