Burlington Flats Unveiling of Historical Marker
A ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 20th, at 1 PM in the Butternut Valley Cemetery, at Burlington Flats for the unveiling of a historical marker to Cato Freedom, a slave who gained his freedom during the Revolutionary War. Following his service, Cato purchased a farm in Burlington, NY, with his pension. The marker will stand inside the Butternut Valley Cemetery where Cato, his wife, and one of his two daughters are buried on County Route 16, Burlington (just outside of Garrattsville).
The marker is sponsored by the Otsego County Historical Association, the Butternut Valley Cemetery, the US Colored Troops Institute, and the local NAACP. The event is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
