Millions of Americans either have or are at risk for Chronic Kidney Disease.  Is that you?  This morning, I had the pleasure of meeting Doria Watson, one of the leaders of the Oneonta Kidney Club which provides information and support to those living with or caring for those with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD).  Doria was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease two years ago and now awaits a kidney transplant.  Despite dealing with this serious health condition, Doria is very enthusiastic about helping others to avoid CKD by eating well and paying attention to their health, and sharing information with those who have been diagnosed with the disease to help them through it.  Listen in as Doria talks about her journey with CKD, signs you're at risk and where people can find help for dealing with CKD.

Here are a few facts about Chronic Kidney Disease from The National Kidney Foundation:

  • 26 million American adults have CKD and millions of others are at increased risk.
  • Early detection can help prevent the progression of kidney disease to kidney failure.
  • Persistent proteinuria (protein in the urine) means CKD is present.
  • High risk groups include those with diabetes, hypertension and family history of kidney disease.
  • African Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and Seniors are at increased risk.
  • Three simple tests can detect CKD: blood pressure, urine albumin and serum creatinine.

For more information about the Oneonta Kidney Club call Doria Watson at (607) 435-8843.  Meetings are held on the third Sunday of each month from noon to 2pm in the Wellness Conference Room at the Foxcare Center, Rt. 7, Oneonta.
