Listen to Whitesnake’s ‘Is This Love (Evolutions Version)': Exclusive Premiere

Whitesnake fans can sneak an early peek at the upcoming deluxe expanded reissue of the band’s hit self-titled 1987 LP — and hear one of the record’s biggest hits in progress — with the “Evolutions Version” of “Is This Love.”

The song, which you can listen to below, is part of a complete bonus disc full of demos and rehearsals from the period leading up to the Whitesnake LP — which is itself just one of several new additions to the original track listing. The deluxe 30th anniversary reissue also includes a disc of live recordings from the era, another compiling remixes of Whitesnake tracks and a DVD collecting music videos, tour footage and a new documentary about the making of the album.

“Is This Love,” written by frontman David Coverdale with guitarist John Sykes, was originally conceived as a possible song for Tina Turner. Fortunately for Whitesnake’s future commercial fortunes, it ultimately served as the second single from the 1987 LP — and continued the album’s success, peaking inside the Top 10 in the group’s native U.K. and reaching No. 2 in the States. Fans long familiar with the hit recording should find an interesting window into the creative process through the “Evolutions Version,” which captures “Is This Love” while it’s still being worked out.

Due in stores Oct. 6, the Whitesnake deluxe edition commemorates a long-awaited commercial breakthrough for the veteran band, which was on the ropes after years of trying to cross over outside the European market. “It was a huge sigh of relief for me when it hit,” Coverdale admitted in an interview conducted for the record’s 20th anniversary. “Once the album started selling and continued to sell, it was very much a case of ‘Thank God!’ Otherwise I probably would have been ruined, and it certainly would have been the end of Whitesnake. I felt it was a welcome payoff for all the years I’d been working hard at it, maintaining the belief I was doing something worthwhile and hoping that one day success would come a-knocking.”
