Now that it's officially spring, we're starting to get a small glimpse of warm weather here and there in Central New York and along with that is outdoor grilling and and sitting around the backyard fire pit on a warmer evening...or can we?  The New York State Department of Environmental Protection states on it's website that there's an open burn ban until May 14.  But don't get too bent out of shape because there are basic exceptions to the rule according to the DEC:

  • Campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed.
  • Small cooking fires are allowed.
  • Fires cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished.
  • Only charcoal or clean, untreated or unpainted wood can be burned.
  • Ceremonial or celebratory bonfires are allowed.

So if you're like me and you enjoy cozying in around a backyard fire and roasting a marshmallow or two, just to feel like spring IS actually here, then feel free!  Any further questions?  Just visit www.dec.ny.gov to get all the details.
