Lock your doors and windows, Oneonta is experiencing a rash of burglaries lately.  There are several burglaries currently under investigation.  In fact, I received a notice from the Oneonta Police Department with information as to what thieves are looking for and how you can help prevent them from entering your home.

If you missed this notice then here is what OPD recommends to prevent break-ins:

  1. Lock doors at night or when not home.
  2. Secure windows with the internal locking mechanism or with a dowel.  Most locking mechanisms allow the window to be open to a certain height which allows fresh air in, but prevents entry.
  3. Do not leave cash or any valuables which may be easily removed in plain sight.
  4. Report any suspicious activity to the police department immediately.
  5. Install motion lights if possible.
  6. Have a neighbor collect mail or newspapers while away.
  7. Maintain a list of serial numbers, model numbers, and identifying descriptors on items of value.

The main message above is to NOT make it easy for would-be intruders.  What's that old saying?  "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?"  You get the idea.
