Oneonta police are investigating a fire that destroyed an abandoned house on city property off of Interstate 88 eastbound, near exit 15 on Monday, April 27th. The fire is considered suspicious because city firefighters might have been hurt during the response, which drew on city resources.  The investigation identified two persons of interest as of Monday night.

Fire Chief Patrick Pigeon said the blaze originated from a campfire inside the old, abandoned house and spread by accident. The house had been consumed by flames by the time firefighters arrived on the scene. The area in and around the house show proof of possible squatters but none were at the scene, and no crews were hurt in response to the fire.

Along with Oneonta, crew members from Otego and West Oneonta provided mutual aid and had the blaze under control in about 90 minutes after arriving on the scene.  No injuries were reported and officials said that no arrests have been made.
