New York will maintain past crime victim statements to the New York State Parole Board for reconsideration every time eligible convicts return for another hearing on possible release from prison.

The measure, signed recently by Governor Andrew Cuomo, was advanced by legislators who say it will relieve victims of having to submit new statements at subsequent hearings, typically every two years.

In a sponsor's memo, Assemblyman Michael DenDekker, a Queens Democrat, said victim impact statements have no expiration date.

The law also says any victim or victim's representative who has submitted a written request for a transcript of the parole interview will get one as soon as it becomes available.
