New York State's new proposed budget will give a raise for about 100,000 caregivers of the disabled next year.

They will see an increase in pay of about 2% for the first time in several years. The case workers, nurses, social workers, aides, cooks, and others serve the developmentally disabled, mentally ill, and elderly, as well as children.

The raise was a point of contention between Governor Andrew Cuomo and the legislature. The governor wanted to keep payroll levels for the six state agencies involved the same, but the legislature prevailed in this year's budget negotiations.
