There has been a lot of controversy recently about the state of football in our country today.  Is it safe for young people to start playing it as kids?  Is this just too much "pc hype?" Is the advance in safety equipment making this a non issue?

Well, this subject has been talked about for years, but it made my ears stand up when I saw that Mike Ditka, one of football's greatest heroes and most legendary tough guys, said during an interview recently (when asked by Bryant Gumble) that no, he would not let his kids begin the sport today because of the inordinate risks involved with the game.

Wow.  Ditka's name and fame (he is an NFL Hall of Famer as well as a Pro Football Hall of Famer) brings a serious new status to the discussion table.  So what do you think?  Is football safe?  Or is this much ado about nothing?

See Mike Ditka's full interview on tomorrow (Tuesday January 20) on HBO "Real Sports with Bryant Gumble"
