Fatal Accident In Roxbury

A vehicle accident on Sunday, June 7, at about 5:48p.m, resulted in one fatality and two others hospital bound in Delaware County. According to NYS Police, the accident occurred on State Route 23 in the Town of Roxbury. Thomas M. Schmiedel, 19, was driving eastbound when he moved into the westbound lane, for an unknown reason, and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Elvira Vogt, 71.

Vogt of Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene and her passenger Robert J. Vogt, 71, of Jefferson suffered a broken arm and other injuries and was transported to Albany Medical Center.

The driver of the other vehicle, Schmiedel, of Prattsville, received internal injuries and was transported to A.O. Fox Hospital and then Bassett Hospital. His passenger Tyler O. Hoyt, 18, of Maplecrest, NY was not injured.

Schmiedel was arrested for Driving While Intoxicated. Additional charges are pending. The investigation is continuing.
