No one knows when (or even if) we'll get another album of new material from David Bowie, but while we wait for a full-length follow-up to 2013's The Next Day, fans can content themselves with a surprise bit of new music in the form of "Blackstar," Bowie's theme song for the upcoming TV series The Last Panthers.

Scheduled to debut in November, the six-part series is helmed by veteran music video director Johan Renck, who described his collaboration with Bowie in a press release that explained, "I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God."

Renck added that Bowie's contribution followed an on-set meeting that left him more than a little awed. "His first response was precise, engaged and curious. The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself — dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word)," he writes. "All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can't fathom what actually happened."

He went on to describe the creative process behind the song in further detail with a separate press release, adding that he showed Bowie the first two episodes of The Last Panthers and discussed "the underlying currents of guilt and personality flaws" in the narrative as well as what Renck calls "the dark heart of Europe." He continues, "We talked about the biblical aspects of human nature. He asked if there was anything else to see, so I showed him the first concept board i had just made for the title sequence — images from the show laced with chimaeras and demons from the worlds of Bosch and Grunewald. That's when he said go — it all fits. Then he played me his new song 'Blackstar.'"

"Blackstar" represents Bowie's first original contribution to a film or TV soundtrack since 1993, when he recorded new music for The Buddha of Suburbia and Cool World, but it isn't the only dramatically derived work he has on the horizon; as previously reported, he's also one of several artists chipping in on the soundtrack to the upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants stage musical.
