The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee is examining a device that allows police to determine if a motorist involved in a collision had been using their smartphone to send a text message. Governor Cuomo ordered the investigation into the so-called “Textalyzer” technology saying many drivers are still using hand held devices while driving, in violation of state laws. One concern is whether the use of the device would raise privacy and civil liberties objections.
