A Key Is NOT Just a Key Any More

So here's what I want to know: when did a key become a fashion statement?  Yes, I'm talking about the kind of keys you open doors with.  You're probably wondering, with good cause, how such an unusual subject came up for me.  

It all happened when I visited a local retailer in Oneonta to get a copy of a house key.  I found the world of keys has been turned upside down and it would seem that it's now a fashion accessory, not just a boring key.  They come in countless themes and color choices.  Even Disney has a line of keys!  Seriously?  Was this really necessary?  Why can't a key just be a key?  I have enough choices in my life to make and I don't need this.

By the way, in case you're wondering, I chose to get a boring old silver version as a duplicate house key.  It was cheaper of course.
